One referral at a time: Stopping the spread of HIV in Malawi's fishing communities
The Fisheries Integration of Society & Habitats project, or FISH, is funded by USAID & implemented by Pact. This biodiversity & climate change adaptation project also works to stop the spread of HIV. With funding from DREAMS & PEPFAR, FISH targets fishing communities, working to bring them HIV testing & services. Fishermen in Malawi have some of the highest rates of HIV & experience barriers to accessing testing. Through FISH, local Peer Mentors provide evidence-based information on HIV. When risk factors are identified, they write referral slips to the nearest health facility for HIV testing or other services. Peer Mentors work closely with their nearest health facility to ensure that referrals are completed & that those who go receive fishermen-friendly services. To reach & follow up with thousands of fishermen, it takes many committed health facility staff. Meet some of them here.
