Makaka Beach Village Committee
The Makaka beach village committee (BVC), located on the southwest arm of Lake Malawi, is one of many strong, functioning BVCs in Malawi that work with both communities and district government officials to establish fish sanctuaries, restore habitats, and reduce the use of illegal fishing gear.
Ten years ago, BVCs didn't see the lake as their own or feel empowered to protect it. Through the USAID-funded Fisheries Integration of Society and Habitats (FISH) project, BVCs have received training in organizational management, fisheries conservation and community engagement. Now, BVCs know that the lake is theirs and are thinking creatively about ways to conserve it.
